Top 10 cities to live in the real estate bust.
In a nutshell all cities are looking like ghost towns with over 10 months of active inventory on the market. Realtors and Mortgage Brokers are fleeing the scene at record rates. Sellers all over the country are leaving homes through foreclosure, and no one can seem to stop it. There are some great places to live in these times, and if you have a minute I will share 10 cities/towns, with you.
Ok so now that you’re on board, I will start by giving up the criteria. Places that have other types of value, good strong business communities, have attempted to control growth, and where people feel safe are going to come out on top of this list.

1. S.Lake Tahoe- Located on the picturesque South Shore of America’s largest alpine lake, South Lake Tahoe truly is a wonderful place to live, work and play. As the only incorporated community in the Lake Tahoe Basin, South Tahoe, as anyone who has been there will call it, takes great pride in being a central hub of one of the country’s most popular tourism destinations. There’s an exciting redevelopment renaissance in progress at the South Shore. Today, Tahoe offers many new opportunities for both visitors and local businesses. If you like to hang out in the mountains, this is your spot.
South Lake Tahoe real estate values are up .08% this year and that seems quite amazing in our economy.
2.) ST. George Island Fla. – Highly valued for its unspoiled natural environment, the coastal communities of Apalachicola, St. George Island and Eastpoint that make up Florida’s Forgotten Coast offer an authentic taste of Florida’s Gulf Coast with plenty of charm and history. You’ll find miles of uncrowded pristine beaches, an endless supply of protected shallow bays, excellent fishing and acres of National and State forests to explore. Combine all this with some of the finest oysters and seafood in the country and you have a place that can’t go wrong. Ocean Goers and Beach Lovers Paradise.
St. George and Apalachicola have seen 16% increases in home values this year.
3.) Durango, Colorado -Nestled in the Animas River Valley and surrounded by two million acres of the San Juan National Forest, Durango is a gem in the rough located in La Plata County in the southwestern corner of Colorado. Where the majestic Rocky Mountains meet the serene desert of the Four Corners region where Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado converge. Nature creates a playground of pine forests, aspen groves, lakes, streams and spectacular views around Durango. Durango Real Estate Values are down just a touch, however, if you’re a wilderness buff or someone who just wants to slow the pace down a bit. This place Rules.
4.) Jackson, Wyoming – While Jackson Hole is one of the most beautiful places to live in our country, its one of the priciest with averages in the Millions. Climbers, Kayakers, and Fishermen all love the countryside as well as some of the best ski resorts in the U.S. make Jackson Hole a great choice.
5.) Easton, MD – Easton, Maryland, “the 8th Best Small Town in America” is an arts and cultural center with a population of over 14,000 individuals who love living in a small town that offers the best of many worlds: access to large metropolitan areas like Baltimore, Annapolis, Washington, and Wilmington; good health care from a strong local hospital and medical community; casual and gourmet dining; shopping for all budgets from collectibles to fine antiques; eclectic art galleries; numerous public golf courses; the splendid Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries in their backyard for sailing, canoeing, kayaking, and crabbing; an historic Town Center with Colonial and Victorian architecture; and an active local community that welcomes new ideas and enthusiasm. 6.) Laramie, WY – Yes the grand state of Wyoming has two entries in our top 10 and for good reason, this place is full of excitement and some of the most amazing scenery on the planet. Laramie has become a social center for the State of Wyoming. The main claim to fame is the existence of the University of Wyoming–the only 4-year college in the state. This has brought many events to the Laramie area, including concerts from such greats as Elton John and the Dave Matthews Band to art shows at the Art Museum/Centennial Complex on campus.
7.) Wisconsin Dells, WI – Wisconsin Dells is a place where the glaciers of the Ice and met the immovable rock formations of Central and Western Wisconsin. Wisconsin Dells is well known as the “Midwest’s Playground” and offers amazing recreation as well as a growing local economy. Real Estate prices in Wisconsin Dells have fallen, yet there are many great condo, single family, and waterfront bargains to be had in Wisconsin Dells.
8.) Hilton Head, SC -Renowned as one of the world’s most family-friendly destinations, Hilton Head Island, SC offers unlimited opportunities for unforgettable vacations and was named one of the top ten family beaches in the country. As an intimate getaway for two or an idyllic backdrop for a family vacation, the Island extends a variety of outdoor and indoor recreational activities. Hilton Head, SC is our top climber for real estate values with almost 40% increase in sales overall in 2008.
9.) Lebanon, NH – Nestled in the Connecticut River Valley midway up state, Lebanon, New Hampshire, is a healthy and thriving community that enjoys both the quiet everyday living of rural life, and the cultural experience of the big city. Appearing more than once in Prentice Hall’s The 100 best Small Towns in America, a Nationwide Guide to the Best in Small Town Living, often in the top four, and Lebanon’s 12,640 residents are living testimonials that this recognition is richly deserved. Lebanon is experiencing resurgence in real estate activity and should weather out this storm no problem.
