My daughter Bethany asked me if I would help her move into her new house in Minnesota. Her goal was to be moved in before the deer-hunting season opened. Even though Wisconsin’s season opened on Sept. 12 and as many avid hunters know, the first couple of weeks are sometimes the best.
In the end, we decided to go to an area west of Eagle River because we know the area and we had not yet hunted there that year. We both decided to head up there the first week in October. The first day we were there we headed out at 3:00pm to get the deer stands up. I then went up to take my seat and hung my bow. As my daugher would say for a women hunter, sitting in a stand, you think about how a deer might come near enough for a shot and how you would shoot it. I’d had a scouting camera out in our hunt area for a couple of weeks and never saw anything of any substantial size. I then started calling the deer to see if anything would come in. It was then four thirty so I got down from the stand. I then texted my daughter to see if she saw any big deer yet. I then walked around to find some tracks or scraping. I didn’t see many tracks so I headed back to my seat. At 5:26 p.m. I heard some noises like something was coming. I then noticed this enormous rack on the buck. It kept on coming closer and closer. I then pulled back on my bow and shot it right in the middle. I knew this deer was the big one I saw from six months ago crossing the road. I was so happy when I shot this 12 pointer and I knew this would make my week. Since my own daughter was with me. I then texted her and she didn’t respond. I then started to gut the deer. I then received a text ten minutes later from her and said she got a big one. She then dragged the buck over and it was a ten pointer. This was her first deer. I am so happy that she got this one.
